Every Deepasthambham is crowned with a Prabhai — a sacred finial that tells a story. Each crown connects the lamp to a deity, a tradition, a community. Choose yours.

The Thattu (Disc) · Plate of the Lamp

Choose Your Disc Design

The thattu is the brass disc — each pillar is stacked with them. Two traditional disc styles are available, each creating a different visual character and quality of light.

03 — Thattu Sizes

Thattu Sizes

The size refers to the diameter of each thattu (disc). A wider disc creates a more commanding, grounded presence. All discs on a single pillar share the same diameter. The taper comes from the stacking, not the disc size.

S
Small
Compact

For personal prayer rooms and home altars. Full detail at intimate scale.

M

The most versatile choice, suits both home shrines and small temple spaces.

04 — Number of Thattu

Number of Discs

Thattu are the stacked discs that form the pillar's body. All numbers carry auspicious sacred significance rooted in Kerala temple tradition. The largest disc sits at the bottom; each one above it is narrower — forming the characteristic tapered silhouette.

05 — The Base

The Foundation

Every Deepasthambham stands on a base that is as considered as the pillar above it. Two traditional forms are available, both cast in solid brass, both designed to carry weight with grace.

Round dome brass base for Deepasthambham lamp pillar — Irinjalakuda Kerala
Traditional · Kerala

Round Base

A clean, dome-shaped brass base with concentric turned rings. Elegant in its simplicity, the pure form that lets the pillar speak. Suited to both home shrines and temple settings where an understated foundation is preferred.

Timeless Form

The rounded base echoes the kalasha — the sacred pot — a vessel of abundance used in Hindu ritual since antiquity.

Kurma tortoise brass base for Deepasthambham — Vishnu avatar Kurma avatara Kerala craft
Kurma · Vishnu Avatara

Tortoise Base

The Kurma base, modelled on the divine tortoise who holds up the world in Hindu cosmology. Richly detailed with carved scrollwork, elephant head motifs, and the unmistakable silhouette of the tortoise shell. The most sacred and traditional foundation.

Kurma Avatara

The second avatar of Vishnu — the divine tortoise who bore Mount Mandara during the churning of the cosmic ocean. Stability, patience, and endurance cast in brass.

Questions & Answers

Everything You Need to Know

A Deepasthambham is a deeply personal object. Every dimension, every symbol carries meaning. These are the questions we hear most often. If yours isn't here, reach us directly and we'll answer it.

What is a Deepasthambham?
A Deepasthambham is a traditional, multi-tiered brass oil lamp designed in the form of a vertical pillar. The word combines deepam (lamp) and sthambham (pillar) in Malayalam. More than just a lamp, a Deepasthambham represents light over darkness, prosperity, and heritage — making it a timeless centrepiece for entrances, courtyards, and prayer spaces.
Is it made of solid brass?
Yes. Every Deepasthambham is made of brass and finished by our artisans here in AKP Metals and Alloys Factory in Irinjalakuda.
Where is it made?
Every Deepasthambham is handcrafted at our workshop AKP Metals and Alloys, Irinjalakuda, Thrissur district, Kerala. With a legacy of over 130 years in metal craftsmanship (since 1896), each piece reflects generations of skill rooted in Kerala's traditional artisan heritage.
What is a thattu/Discs and how many discs should I choose?
Each Disc is a brass plate that holds oil and wicks. Stack more plates to add height, light, and grandeur to your Deepasthambham. The number you choose shapes both the look and the tradition your lamp carries. The 5 Thattu is the most popular choice for homes, versatile enough for prayer rooms and courtyards. For temples, wedding stages, and grand venues, the 7 Thattu and 9 Thattu are the traditional favourites.
What is the difference between the Round and Wick disc?
The Round Disc Deepasthambham features a smooth, flat surface to hold oil and wicks. It is easier to clean and maintain, making it a practical choice for regular home use while still offering a clean, elegant look. The Wick Disc Deepasthambham has dedicated wick holders around its edge, creating a radiant ring of multiple flames when lit. This design reflects the traditional Kerala temple style, giving it a more authentic and ceremonial appeal.
What sizes are available?
We offer all standard sizes and shapes of Deepasthambham mentioned on the page, readily available in stock.
How long does it take to receive my order?
The order will be delivered within a minimum of 2 days and a maximum of 10 days from the date of dispatch, depending on the region.
