Tradition. Kerala's Bronze Craft Since 1896

130 years ago, A.K. Poulose lit a furnace in his backyard and began a legacy that has endured ever since.

Our Story
“Although a lawyer by profession, deep within my heart I always wanted to continue the legacy laid out by my forefathers. Having picked up the values and ethics from my father, I found it natural to carry forward the responsibility of keeping the limelight focused on the AKP brand.

Chapter I

A Workshop, a Tradition,
and a Standard Worth Keeping

1896 The Beginning

“To sustain the traditional way of cooking that has always been our purpose.”

In 1896, in the temple town of Irinjalakuda in Thrissur district, A.K. Poulose Alengaden began a small bronze craft workshop from the backyard of his residence. Despite its modest beginnings, the company’s dedication to craftsmanship and quality allowed it to flourish, paving the way for a legacy that has stood the test of time.

His handcrafted bronze and brass utensils became a familiar and trusted presence at festivals across the region. Families chose AKP pieces not for novelty, but because they knew what they were getting something made to endure, made to nourish, made to be passed down.

That founding principle has not changed.

“A well-made bronze vessel doesn’t just cook food. It connects a kitchen to a lineage of kitchens that came before it.”

A Turning Point

The moment that brought us back to bronze.

In the late 1970s, Indian kitchens began to change. Stainless steel and aluminium vessels lighter and easier to maintain quickly became the preferred choice for everyday cooking. As convenience took precedence, the demand for bronze and brass utensils, once central to every household, gradually declined.

As the tide turned, something quieter receded with it the deeper philosophy behind bronze cooking: patience in preparation, nourishment in practice, and longevity by design.

Not long ago, in an antique shop, one of our own came across a bronze Uruli bearing the AKP mark nearly seventy years old, yet preserved in remarkable condition. Its surface carried the quiet dignity of decades of use. It had aged with honour, not with weakness.

There was no grand revelation only a clear realisation. If we had once created something built to endure generations, we had a responsibility to create it again. That Uruli became the quiet force behind our return to traditional bronze not as nostalgia, but as a recommitment to the standard we were built upon and to a more sustainable future, where what we make today is designed to last for decades, not just seasons.

Chapter II

Four Generations,
One Unbroken Line

1896 A.K. Poulose Alengaden — 1st Generation

He started Alenghaden Vessels House, a small-scale workshop from the backyard of his residence in Irinjalakuda. A dedication to craftsmanship laid a foundation that would stand the test of time.

1959 A.P. George — 2nd Generation

A pivotal turning point. A.P. George takes the helm and diversifies into steel and aluminium vessels — broadening AKP’s reach while preserving its heritage roots under the name AKP Metals & Alloys.

2012 John George — 3rd Generation

AKP Homeware is founded, bringing the brand closer to everyday homes. Inspired by a 70-year-old AKP bronze Uruli discovered in an antique shop, John George begins revamping the factory to return to traditional bronze utensils — a recommitment to the standard AKP was built upon.

Today George John — 4th Generation

Working alongside his father John George, George John carries the legacy forward. akponline.store brings 130 years of craft to every home in India and beyond, with a focus solely on traditional bronze utensils built to last generations.

Chapter III

The Metal That
Never Compromises

The Alloy

True bronze is a precise marriage of copper and tin, the same specification used in Kerala’s most revered temple instruments. Every batch we cast begins here, with no substitution and no shortcuts.

The Tradition

Bronze cookware has been central to Kerala’s culinary heritage for centuries. The same vessel used to make payasam at Onam, to serve a festive sadya, to warm medicinal kadhas — these are not utensils. They are participants in a way of life.

The Promise

A genuine bronze vessel improves with age and careful use. It does not degrade, chip, or release toxins. Fully repairable, re-polishable, and 100% recyclable. We found one of ours, 70 years old, still perfect. That is the only quality assurance we need.

Chapter IV

How We Make
What We Make

Every piece passes through five stages — each one as deliberate as the one before it.

01
Smelting

Copper and tin melted at over 900°C into bell-metal grade bronze

02
Sand Casting

Molten bronze poured into sand moulds, every cast deliberate

03
Lathing

Turned on a lathe for the smooth, consistent finish of every AKP piece

04
Finishing

Polish, quality inspection, and the mark held since 1896

Chapter V

Why Your Grandmother’s
Kitchen Knew Best

Ayurvedic Properties

Bronze is Tridoshic, it balances all three doshas. Food cooked in bronze absorbs trace minerals that support immunity and digestion. Ancient texts prescribed bronze as the ideal vessel for cooking and medicine alike.

Naturally Antimicrobial

Copper, the primary component of bronze, kills bacteria on contact. Bronze surfaces reduce microbial contamination significantly compared to stainless steel, with no chemicals, no coatings, no degradation over time.

Built to Outlast

Unlike non-stick cookware that degrades within years, a genuine bronze vessel improves with age. Fully repairable, re-polishable, and 100% recyclable. When you buy AKP bronze, you are buying for the next generation too.

Taste & Nourishment

There is a reason payasam made in a bronze Uruli tastes the way it does. Trace minerals leach naturally into food in beneficial amounts, enhancing flavour and nutrition. Traditional cooking was never about nostalgia, it was always about doing it correctly.

A Town of Deep
Cultural Memory

Irinjalakuda is not simply where AKP was founded. It is the cultural and spiritual context that shaped everything we make. Home to the ancient Koodalmanikyam Temple and a living tradition of Kathakali and classical arts, this is a place where heritage is not preserved. It is practised daily.

When you hold an AKP piece, you are holding something made in a place that has always understood the value of making things well.

Uncompromised Alloy

Every batch tested before it enters the furnace. No shortcuts, no substitutes.

Human Hands

The finishing of every AKP piece comes from craftspeople trained in the tradition of our founders not a machine.

Direct from Source

We manufacture what we sell. Direct from our Irinjalakuda factory to your kitchen, at an honest price.

Built to Endure

Everything we make is built to last a lifetime, fully repairable, and 100% recyclable at end of life.

1896

“We don’t just make utensils. We make products that will outlive us.”
